Why the Warehouse Is Moving Off Wi-Fi-Only Keypad Terminals

The classic warehouse terminals — the MC2200, MC3300, and MC3400 — share one structural limitation: they are Wi-Fi-only devices with no GNSS. Inside the four walls that is fine; the moment work moves to the yard, the dock, or a trailer, those devices go dark. Three trends make this a buying problem today:

• Real-time fleet dispatch needs cellular. 5G private networks and cellular fallback are becoming standard in 3PL and omnichannel operations. Every MC2200/MC3300/MC3400 in the fleet is a device that cannot participate.

1. Match the keypad to the role

Receiving, putaway, picking, and cycle-counting favor different key layouts. JMDK40 standardizes on the 29/38/47-key family used across Zebra MC-line roles, so you can swap devices between job functions without retraining. Confirm the layout your WMS shortcuts assume before you pilot.

2. Check cellular and GNSS for the work that happens outside the aisles

If trailers, yards, docks, or remote sites are part of the workflow, Wi-Fi-only terminals create blind spots.
