Zebra® RFD90 UHF RFID Sled
Long-range ultra-rugged UHF RFID sled for yards, docks and cold storage, IP65/IP67 sealed

RFD90
The RFD90 is a Zebra® UHF RFID sled supplied by JNXRFID to the manufacturer's published specification. It carries the UHF radio, the antenna and the trigger; the screen, keypad and barcode scanner stay on the host mobile computer it mounts to.
- 1,300+ tag reads per second
- Read range up to 22.9 m
- IP65 / IP67
- 7000 mAh battery
Key Features
- RFID performance
- 1,300+ tag reads per second, matching the RFD40 rate with a much longer reach.
- Read range
- Two variants: the RFD9030 standard-range unit at approximately 22 ft (6.7 m) nominal, and the RFD9090 long-range unit at approximately 75 ft (22.9 m) nominal. State which one is being quoted, because the two are different units.
- Ruggedness
- IP65 and IP67 sealing, rated for repeated 6 ft (1.8 m) drops to concrete and 1000 half-metre tumbles.
- Where the radio is
- This is a sled, not a sealed handheld. The UHF radio is in the sled; the display, keypad and scanner stay on the host mobile computer it mounts to.
- Operating temperature
- Good from -20°C to 55°C, which is what makes it usable in yard and dock environments rather than only indoors.
- Battery
- 7000 mAh PowerPrecision+ battery, with the trigger arrangement of a pistol-grip reader.
- Host connection
- Connects to the host through eConnex adapters on hosts with a rear docking connector, or over Bluetooth on others.

What to check before you specify a handheld?
The most common mistake in an RFID handheld quote is assuming the radio is in the handheld. On this family it is in the sled, and host computers are also sold without any UHF radio. The answers below cover what to confirm first.
How far does the RFD90 read?
It depends which variant. The RFD9030 standard-range unit is quoted at approximately 22 ft (6.7 m) nominal, and the RFD9090 long-range unit at approximately 75 ft (22.9 m) nominal. They are separate units, so the range of the specific one being quoted should be confirmed rather than carried over from the family name.
How fast does it read?
1,300+ tag reads per second, the same rate as the RFD40. The difference between the two is reach and ruggedness, not speed.
Where does it stand up to?
IP65 and IP67 sealing, repeated 6 ft (1.8 m) drops to concrete, 1000 tumbles from 0.5 m, and an operating range of -20°C to 55°C. That is what makes it a yard and dock unit rather than a stockroom unit.
Is the UHF radio inside the handheld or in the RFD90?
In the RFD90. It is a sled: the UHF radio, the antenna and the trigger are in the sled, and the screen, keypad and scanner stay on the host mobile computer it mounts to. Zebra also sells otherwise similar mobile computers with no UHF radio at all, so the part that carries the radio should be confirmed before a handheld is quoted for an RFID job.
Which mobile computers does it fit?
eConnex adapters are used on hosts with a rear docking connector, and Bluetooth adapters on hosts without one. The adapter required depends on the host model, so the host and the sled have to be quoted together rather than separately.
When is the RFD40 the better choice?
When the work is indoors at close range: cycle counting, stockroom and item finding, where the RFD40's maximum 40 ft (12 m) is ample and the unit is easier to carry. The RFD90 earns its size in yards, docks and cold storage where the read distance and the sealing rating decide the job.
